Amongst all the students searching for lightweight, reliable laptops before the start of the new academic year is JMOOR, who has asked for advice from the Z.GEEK forum. He is after a notebook primarily for study (but being a student, he’ll probably end up using it for gaming!), with a small screen, solid battery life and ideally without Vista.

In the small and lightweight laptop stakes, the Toshiba Portege M400 is perfect, with a 12″ screen and petite design that makes it an ideal travelling companion. A recent article about the M400 on pocket-lint.co.uk offers a comprehensive review of the specifications and states that, though running Vista, you can still get units which run XP.
