Student SOS for superb Satellite sale?

Five days ago R_L_S of The Student Room pleaded for assistance from his fellow board members over a choice of new Toshiba laptop. Unfortunately, the response hasn’t been too great and I was hoping readers of this site could be more helpful!

After three years of good service, R_L_S’s current laptop is feeling a bit worse for wear and it looks as though an upgrade is needed. As R_L_S says: “I’m off to Uni so will basically just be using it for the usual MS office malarkey, internet, the odd game and to play music…and DVDs.”

The temptation is the Satellite L300-11C which is being sold at R_L_S’s local shop for a bargain price of £350. As the stricken student shouts their SOS is there anyone reading this who can offer any advice?

Christmas laptop search

Like many parents this Christmas Kevan Kelly is on a mission to find a laptop to keep a teenager happy and to help find the right one he has turned to The Computer Forums for advice.

For the moment the laptop will only be used for downloading, MSN and photoshop, though a webcam would be useful. Kevan Kelly is also after a laptop with a decent memory as he hopes that it will be used for study in the future! Dave Hybrid has listed the things that you can get in a laptop for the £500 budget Kevan Kelly has, though there are still no recommendations.

Keeping to under £500 and boasting specifications such as Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, WiFi and an intergrated webcam, the Toshiba U300 sounds like a perfect choice for Kevan Kelly. However there is nothing like personal recommendations to help, so if you have had experience of the U300 or know a laptop you think would suit Kevan Kelly’s needs, click on this link and view the forum.

Satellite M205, ‘excellent’ or ‘limited’?

JerryJ has written a detailed and thorough review of the Toshiba Satellite M205 to help readers of Notebook Forums decide on the perfect Christmas gift! Describing it as an ‘impressive, 14” budget notebook’ with battery life, screen quality and storage space as starring features.

Despite getting a generally good feeling from the M205, JerryJ was disappointed by the graphics processor which he felt it was the laptop’s main limiting factor. He also felt that the keyboard was not quite up to scratch - notably too much keyboard flex. All in all he decided it was an excellent laptop but lacked ‘horsepower for serious gaming’.

Have you any experience of the Satellite M205; if so where the graphics up to scratch? How well did games run? To read the review and join the discussion, follow this link.

Feature packed U305

Keeping firmly in his daughter’s good books as far as laptops are concerned is Alexpl who, knowing that buying the right laptop can be a stressful as well as an important investment, has asked for some advice from Notebook Forums.

Alexpl may not know which laptop to by but he’s pretty sure that his daughter needs a fairly lightweight laptop complete with Vista and 2GB of RAM. It also needs to last for 4 years and use Santa Rosa! Screen quality is also important, as his daughter is short sighted and won’t enjoy using a grainy or flickery screen. With the school term looming advice is needed ASAP.

The Satellite U305 could almost be custom-built for Alexpl! In a recent CNET review, particular praise is reserved for it excellent 13″ screen which uses TruBrite technology to ensure that it’s sharp and bright without being distracting! The review goes on to reveal how the U305 fared in its numerous system tests and describes it as perfect for home users who still want a feature packed notebook.

High-quality, Multipurpose machine

Boop 2 has the asked the experts at Computer Forum for help in finding a new ‘high-quality, multipurpose machine’ to replace his three year old Dell. He admits that, when it comes to computers, he has a lot to learn so an easy-to-use work and play laptop is needed.

As if in answer to Boop 2, John has written a review of the Toshiba P100 on Tech Blog describing it as a ‘general purpose, high-end workstation’. He thinks it’s a powerful machine that would have no trouble handling heavy apps. He also shares his feelings on its usability, saying it has a ‘familiar’ feeling that makes it easy to use. With key specs such as 2GB RAM, 200GB HDD and WiFi, the P100 is certainly an impressive multipurpose machine.

To read the full account of John’s experiences and feelings re: the P100, follow this link to his blog.
