Toshiba Qosmio G40 – a ‘powerful media machine’

Andrew Carr, writing on We Got Served, has had his hands on the Qosmio G40 and reckons it ‘offers everything you need in a media centre PC’, but that will close up when you’re done.

He doesn’t shy away from the fact that the Qosmio is ‘not a slim notebook PC’ and describes the inside of the device as having ‘several acres of white plastic’ to fill with gizmos and gadgets, which it does well with a ‘good quality keyboard’ and ‘striking’ Harmon Kardon speaker grills. He also mentions the hybrid tuner setup, which allows users to ‘watch and record two channels simultaneously’ through the Media Centre. g40-toshiba-qosmio.jpg

Summing up, Andrew reckons the ‘plethora’ of connections and ‘fantastic display’ make this machine a winner, but is quick to highlight that it is ‘not the most mobile of beasts’. Have you seen the G40? What are your opinions? Do you agree with Andrew’s thoughts? Head over and let him know.

iGadget Life succumb to the Qosmio G40

I say succumb, because with a laptop of these beast-like dimensions it seems that the only response one could viably have would be one of submission. One of the first things iGadget Life do in their review with their Qosmio G40 is stack a Eee Pc and Macbook on it… nice.

qosmio-g40-beast.jpg

Although initially sceptical about (intimidated by? ;)) the bulk of the laptop and the array of distractions that are revealed once the lid is up and you are greeted with a vast white expanse, a moment to establish familiarity with the hardware and specs reveals the Qosmio for the “entertainment powerhouse” it is.

In reference to the harman/kardon setup, “The sound is just stunning, I have never heard such quality audio come from a laptop, and everybody that heard it was just blown away by the quality.”

Then there is the gorgeous 17 inch screen with HD capability, “The quality is amazing.”

The conclusion is one of high praise, despite admitting that the weight is an issue, a laptop by name doesn’t necessarily mean ‘portable’. However, this did little to quell the belief that “It may not be the best looking of laptops, but feature-wise, that really doesn’t matter, as it wipes the floor with everything I have previously seen.”

Notebooks that go ‘bing’ - the Qosmio G40 review

qosmio-g40.pngSteve from Machines That Go Bing has posted an in-depth review of the Toshiba Qosmio G40, testing to see how it “stacks up as a games machine as will as a media box.” He first gives an overview of the G40 specs, writing that he suspects “the 250GB hard disk will fill up very quickly”, after which he gives his first impression of the notebook.

Though Steve finds the lack of numeric keypad an annoyance and dislikes that the blue lights remain on when watching a DVD (he likes watching films in the dark for a bit of atmosphere), he finds the G40 is great for game playing; at lower resolutions, the frame rate “rarely fell below 60 fps even with full shadow complexity, filtering and textures.” He also thinks the sound is “fantastic” and the 17” display is great for playing movies and games.

Steve sums up by saying that he thinks it’s a little heavy to be very portable, but it’s great to move around the house and garden and the ideal use of the notebook “would probably be for a child’s bedroom or a parent’s study”, after which he offers a full listing of the Qosmio G40’s specifications. Read the full review at Machines That Go Bing.

Steve ‘Apple’ interview – and a comprehensive Toshiba Qosmio G40 blog review

He promised tricky questions, and he delivered. It’s back to our old pal Steve at machinesgobing.com, and his interview speaking to the Emily Shirley, Head of Product Marketing at Toshiba Europe GmbH, during Toshiba’s ‘Take a Closer Look’ event in Paris on the 7th May. To find out where Toshiba pitch themselves in the market compared to Apple, where they see the future of laptop design and the response to the suggestion that the Portégé M800 is a stereotyped American design, follow this link here for a really good read!

And for an extensive review of the Qosmio G40, look no further than this next chap… A few weeks ago we approached Barbie, a sometime roadie and previous occupant of almost any career you can imagine (if you don’t believe me, check his about page) – to review the Toshiba Qosmio G40 – the result being a spectacular essay which covers everything from his dislike of Microsoft Vista, to the quality of the screen. One of his conclusions “All in all I wouldn’t recommend this as portable laptop. As a Media Centre or a high-end games machine, then it fairs much better.” – but there’s so much more than this to review, I suggest you head over and read it.

By Joeb! Toshiba Qosmio G40 laptop lands in the blogosphere for review

So one of our Qosmio G40s has landed in the blogosphere – and despite initial scepticism, its recipient Joeb over on Joeb’s Blog (which specialises in Ubuntu, Windows, Xbox 360…& Stuff) is now the proud owner (for a few weeks at least) of said laptop.

Of course, having been in possession of the computer for but 24 hours or less, he hasn’t found out too much about the general running of it just yet – but he has come up with some initial reactions to the machine, as well as treating his readers to some rather nifty pictures too.

So, to read his whole post – follow this link – and be sure to keep an eye out for any more updates. Oh, and if you blog, post in forums or are generally active in the social media, and would like to be placed on the waiting list to trial a Qosmio, or a Portégé R500 – do drop us an email.

Pictures show best aspects of ‘sweet’ Qosmio

qos45_1.jpg

Whilst this isn’t the most recent write up of Toshiba’s Qosmio G45, Rory Reid brings us some great pictures of the pertinent aspects of the machine. There are some good close up shots of the controls and the speakers that give you an idea of the quality and also the size of the machine.

Alongside the pictures is a mini review, from which the Qosmio comes out very well. Rory says that Toshiba have done ‘a very good job from an aesthetic point of view’, with the glossy black lid and the shiny white veneer on the inside being helped by the ‘gallons of blue LED lighting’. The Harmon Kardon hardware gets the thumbs up, with the five separate speakers coming out ‘louder than your Dad’s IBM’.

Safe to say Rory is a fan of the Qosmio, but are you? Email us for the possibility of testing a Qosmio G40 for a few weeks and you can form your own opinion.

Le Qosmio G40-12J portable mulitmédia 17’’

toshiba-qosmio-g40-12j.jpg

Vielen Dank! ;-)
