It’s been just about a month since we covered the unveiling of Toshiba’s NB100-11R at Toshiba’s first ever Mobility Conference in Zurich and Stephen Patrick over at Pocketlint has just posted an indepth review of the notebook.

Describing the release as “better later than never” he reckons it’s a vast improvement over the “toy-like” mini-notebook pioneer Eee and its compatriots, looking more like “a bona-fida miniature laptop.” He describes this as being partly due to the lack of “thick and unsightly bezels” often found on the NB100’s competitors whose own display makes the most of the available real estate by stretching as close to the edge as possible.

He’s also smitten with the Toshiba-tweaked version of Ubuntu which he says provides “a comprehensive suite of built-in applications all compatible with the software you’re already accustomed to. PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can all be accessed with ease, and it represents huge value for money in comparison to the more expensive XP model”.

His verdict? “With its mini-me styling, comprehensive software suite and easy to use operating system, it’s impossible to dislike the NB100…some users will definitely find the small keyboard too cramped. Other than that, it’s an excellent effort, and one that comes highly recommended.”

Proxy hat sich ans linux-forum.de gewandt, weil er sein L300-180 mit Linux betreiben will, aber da fehlen ihm noch die passenden Treiber für seine “Wlankarte (eingebaut) von Realtek”, deswegen musste er die ganze Aktion erstmal wieder ablasen. 

Wenn ihr eine Lösung für sein Problem kennt, dann schreibt doch bitte ins Forum.

Was mich interessiert ist, ob jemand von euch vielleicht schon Erfahrung mit Toshiba und Linux gemacht hat. Und wenn ja natürlich, wie es funktioniert hat. Also ich freu mich auf ein paar Kommentare.

Das ist doch schön wenn mal alles klappt, oder? So ist es Horst gegangen, er hat Ubuntu 8.04 auf seinem Toshiba Satellite S 5200-801 installiert und es ging schnell, proplemlos und einfach.

Er selbst war vorher, wie er sagt ein “absolut blutiger Linux Laien der einfach nichtmehr doof ins Fenster glotzen wollte” und scheint jetzt ein begeisterter Linux User zu sein. Seine ganze Story findet ihr hier.

Das ganz ist auch noch top aktuell, da es bald das neuen Toshiba Netbook NB-100 gibt, was standardmässig mit Linux ausgeliefert wird und laut winfuture.de handelt es sich dabei um Ubuntu.
Also vielleicht lohnt sich schon mal ein Blick in die Ubuntu-Welt !

Wenn ihr selbst schon mal Erfahrung mit Linux auf eurem Toshiba Rechner gemacht habt, dann lasst es uns doch bitte wissen. Wenn nicht, vielleicht versucht ihr es ja mal übers Wochenende, das Wetter ist ja eh nicht mehr so toll.

We thought we’d indulge in a bit of a blast about some of the UK’s most popular Social Media meeting places today on talkToshiba – while we prepare the ground for tomorrow’s special feature, profiling one of our favourite presences out in the space.

We’ve been browsing Twitter (you can follow us there for almost instant blog updates if you so desire) and noted a couple of interesting points. Firstly, Karl Goddard who runs the Learning ICT blog, who we can only imagine has picked up perhaps a Satellite P200 and seems particularly happy with his purchase - “now playing with shiny new Toshiba laptop… monster 17″ screen, fullsize kboard im even likin Vista - but no built in web cam - pics later!”

Meanwhile, Usha Vencatachallam too has informed followers via his ‘tweetery’ that he is having fun with Toshiba too “Sony Vaio just upped and died. Toshiba is my new best friend. Making a snap laptop decision is not as bad as I imagined.” John from vivaveracruz however has managed to get his trip back in order, thanks to Toshiba and his sister-in-law. “While our return to New Mexico has been delayed because my new laptop died and needed attending to, I borrowed a fine seldom used Toshiba laptop from my sister-in-law.”

A cursory glance at Facebook reveals 1,441 Toshiba fans keen to express their opinion of the brand – and Wasim Arshad has expressed his thoughts on one model particularly. “I have had my Toshiba Equium M40X-189 laptop for around 3 years now and it has never become physically faulty! It’s brilliant!!”

Finally – does anyone run a Toshiba laptop with Linux? Zeke certainly does, and stumbled upon this fascinating article with advice on just that…

So should it be the Sony VAIO, the tiny little ASUS Eee 8g 7″ or the Toshiba Portege R400 asks Cao, as she looks for the ultimate laptop to fulfill all of her needs in portable mobile blogging? She’s been shopping around, and after focusing on these three models, I for one am rather interested in which she’s going to pick? Do let us know Cao!

Follow her journey, or impart your own wisdom over here, but meanwhile let’s take a look at what she believes are the main pluses and minuses of the three models –

Firstly, the Vaio which she would certainly fancy “if money was no object” – but of course, it oh so regularly is. Nonetheless this notebook includes “fancy little things like a fingerprint sensor”, although it does come fully loaded with Vista – which is not entirely Cao’s bag.

Next up, and “a virtual toy - made for small child-like hands” is the tiny little ASUS Eee 8g 7″ with Linux – which may not have “all the bells and whistles” – but does have a rather alluring pricetag to match and may “be just the ticket”.

And then, looking “like a winner” is the Toshiba Portégé R400 – which once again throws up the old Vista issues - but Cao “gathers [that] with the next service, Vista’s ‘problems’ will be solved”.

An interesting race indeed. Let us know who you think should win!

PSchroer aus dem pc-welt-Forum, besitzt ein Toshiba Satellite Notebook mit dem Betriebssystem Windows Vista und zusätzlich Suse Linux 10.0. Die Sache hat nur einen Haken unter Linux bekommt er nur die Standard VGA 800×600 Auflösung hin. zotenschmied meint folgendes dazu, Zitat: “… ich würde an deiner Stelle direkt mit Suse 10.3 loslegen, denn damit hat es bei mir auf Anhieb funktioniert. … wenn du die CD einlegst, dann wirst du nach dem Willkommen nach verschiedenen Optionen gefragt. diese werden am unteren Bildrand angezeigt und durch betätigen einer Funktionstaste ausgewählt. Da ist dann die Bildschirmauflösung dabei. Später in der Installation kannst du noch die Größe des Bildschirms und das Seitenverhältnis auswählen. …” Ein Dankeschön auch hierfür! Dans “Console Toshiba/Paramètres du matériel Toshiba/Séquence de démarrage”, il voit “CD/DVD->DD->LD->LAN”.
Il a compris que DD voulait dire disque dur interne et LAN le réseau mais:

Buckethead möchte gern wissen, woher er einen leistungsstärkeren Akku für seinen Toshiba Satellite M105-S3031. Des Weiteren fragt er, ob es ein Tool gibt, mit dem man den Akku optimieren kann (für das Betriebssystem LINUX). Notebooker aus dem notebookforum meint zum Thema: leistungsstärkeren Akku, Zitat: “…Extended Capacity Battery - Li-Ion, 9-Zellen, 6000mAh PA3478U-1BRS …” Wer jetzt noch eine Idee zum Tool hat oder auch einfach neugierig ist, hier klicken und ihr gelangt zum vollständigen Forumsbeitrag! armada1750 sur commentcamarche a essayé d’installer Mandrake 10.1 sur son pc portable Toshiba satellite A100-483, mais après la première page : le message “error No cdrom device found” s affiche puis demande de choisir “which driver should I try to gain SCSI access?” avec une liste floopy.ko,cdrom.ko….
et s’il choisi cdrom.ko il demande de rentrer des paramètres pour le Kernel

Vu les capacités de ton PC, tu devrais plutôt prendre la dernière version de Mandriva et suivre ces conseils pour le téléchargement et le gravage ;

Vérifier l’intégrité de ton image “iso” en comparant sa somme MD5 avant de la graver.
