5 Star Amazon review of the Toshiba Satellite A200

Browsing Amazon, I couldn’t help but notice this 5 star review about the Toshiba Satellite A200, and comments from Mr J Alloway regarding his first ever notebook purchase.

Taking great pleasure in the speed that he experienced with this particular notebook “Comparing this Laptop to the HP I would the say this laptop is much faster”, and the rapid internet he was able to achieve “Very fast internet, faster than the Pavilion” – he went on describe his pleasure at the sound on both this computer and its competitor.

Of course, every good thing has a downside, and he was not so sure on the “weight and the touchpad” – but quantifying his last statement with an admission that “all touchpad’s on laptops are not as good as they should be” – he summed up very positively, and with 5 gold stars.

“Overall, very fast, will do anything for your needs and you can’t go wrong.”

A dark Jedi uses the laptop force to bag a Toshiba Satellite L300

Toshiba L300Darkjedimaster has apparently been searching for a laptop for awhile now so this thread on Digital Spy would have us believe, and although he is “limited to how much he can spend”, he thinks “he may have found a good deal” in the form of the Toshiba Satellite L300-18D, available at only £350.

The laptop, which sports some pretty tidy spec, including a 2.00ghz core 2 duo processor, 2gb RAM, 120gb hdd and plenty more – but ever cautious, our Star Wars themed pal has been keen to seek the advice of others, and the response has been rather favourable, albeit with certain provisos.

Loobster was keen to advise “Yep you will be pleased with that. I set up the same model for a friend with a slightly slower processor and it flew once I took the Norton crapware off, so don’t forget to do that”. Frasera was positive too, if not emphatic suggesting “its specs are ok”.

Loobster again to finish though, “The mid-range Core2Duo chips like the one in this laptop are very fast and easily good enough for most things. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how quick it is.

Stuart Waterman rocks the Toshiba X200 laptop

satellitex200.jpgIt may not be the most portable of laptops, but Stuart Waterman’s review of the Toshiba X200, which he crafted exquisitely after we sent him a notebook to trial, has proved a very interesting look at the media capabilities of the device.

A keen purveyor of music, mixing (well his housemate is at least) and videos, Stuart was keen to extol the virtues of its sonic capabilities, suggesting “the sound is great, and many a post-pub night were spent drunkenly playing hip-hop videos on YouTube with the volume cranked up”. He didn’t get around to watching movies with it but was nonetheless claimed “It’s similarly impressive when you watch longer video content”.

It’s good news for those who like to spread their musical creativity too, and Stuart reports that his “flatmate, a DJ, used it to create a new mix and was impressed with how easily it handled the process.” OK, so the touchpad was “gimmicky to the point of irritation”, but in conclusion he seemed very happy with the laptop: All-round a pleasing experience, then - I’ll miss the X200 for the post-pub YouTube forays if nothing else. Maybe de-gimmickify the mouse pad, though.”

Trustedreviews give the Toshiba Portégé R600 laptop a thorough going over!

Portege R600If you love your notebooks “impossibly thin and light”, then Toshiba’s re-working of its 755 gram laptop the Portégé R500 (imaginatively monikered the Portégé R600) should intrigue you – as it has the folk at trustedreviews.com.

Initially somewhat disappointed with its predecessor, they were “were delighted to discover a much improved machine when we got our hands-on on the Portégé R600 at Toshiba’s Mobility Conference in Zurich” – reassuring us that “problems we had seen with its predecessor were largely remedied.”

Whatsmore, according to Andy Vandervell, “nowhere are the improvements more apparent than in the keyboard” – and “the build quality issues of the R500 have been remedied quite comprehensively”. Also, with new batteries on their way (see here for details) – things are only looking up for the world’s trimmest laptop.

So pop over to read the full low-down at trustedrevies.com, and with it the interesting shots of the laptop from all angles – not to mention stripped of its tasty shell!

Tom from talkToshiba takes in the IFA in Berlin

Anyone been at the IFA this week? No, nor I sadly – but happily for talkToshiba we have sent one of our more intrepid bloggers by the name of Tom to the event, to take a look about and see what he could see. Which was an awful lot by all accounts!

Describing the event as ‘absolutely – just absolutely huge’, we could have asked him to provide a run down of everything he had seen and been impressed by… But his fingers would have no doubt fallen off, so I thought I’d just note a few of his, and others highlights – and direct to you to his flickr pictures of the event.

Lifeatmost.com were particularly impressed with the Toshiba Qosmio X300, and have taken some pretty pictures of the powerful gaming machine, while techvideoblog have decided that the Toshiba R500 is still the one for them, saying that the “this business high end Toshiba Laptop has been out for over a year, but it’s still cool to check out”.

“Toshiba’s SD Multi Tool and SD Photo Editor are a nice, touchable surprise” say gizmohacker.com – but one of my favourite photos I’ve seen is the one below of a dismantle Toshiba Portégé R500 taken by our very own Tom. It’s rare you really get behind the (rather attractive) shell of a laptop like this. Take a look, and if you were at the show, do leave us a comment and let us know how you got on.

Toshiba Qosmio G50 is the coolest thing seen at IFA today

We Got Served, the windows home server site, has kindly offered its “WGS prize for the coolest thing seen at IFA today” award to *fanfare please* the new Toshiba Qosmio G50 laptop.

Despite his admission that you “wouldn’t want to take one out on a date”, and his usual dismissal of desktop replacement laptops, Terry is nonetheless head-over-heels with admiration for this computer. Most notable to him is the Gesture Control technology “which allows you to control the computer (including Media Center) simply by waving your fist in the air – the gestures you make are picked up by the G50’s integrated webcam.”

He continues “You may never use it in anger if you own one of these laptops, but it scores big on the show-off scale.” Too true – what better way to impress the neighbors than flicking on an episode of Family Guy with nothing more than a flick of the thumb? A warning though: “That said, if you are using one, be careful not to get angry in front of the TV - who knows the fist-shaking carnage you could cause!” Good point Terry!

Stylishly skinned Toshiba laptops to go…

Open Solaris Skin

Toshiba style may be timeless, but in these days where strong individuality is key amongst almost everyone, increased customisation of one’s laptop is becoming second nature. From desktop backgrounds of favoured sports teams, models or friends – to themes, aggregated home pages and more, one way is simply not enough. And it is unsurprising that some

particularly dedicated individuals have taken the time to customise their Toshiba laptops in some breathtaking style!

Chic Geek Skin

Just look at what happened to Jeff’s Tecra M5 when he combined “a great graphic, a great offering, and a little adhesive”.

Or perhaps you prefer chicgeek’s starry Toshiba Satellite A100, with this deep blue design in aquamarine.

MyTego meanwhile has created this rather magnificent skin, taking something of an acid-house theme with neon blue/yellow heads on his Toshiba A-100.

My Tego Skin

All superb – but have you seen any better yourself, or do you own the most sweetly-skinned laptop in town? Do let us know!

Toshiba Satellite A300 laptop gets a cracking review from gaj-it

Toshiba Satellite A300It’s always nice to get in a jolly positive review from a blog we’re big fans of, and so this glowing take on the Toshiba Satellite A300D has seen smiles all round the talkToshiba office today.

And it’s the gaj-it.com blog today who provided the write-up, and without going into too much detail (we suggest you pop over and read here), just take a look at the overall verdict.

Design 9/10
Usability: 8/10
Features: 9/10
Value: 8/10

Particularly impressed with the sound which was “clear and crisp, even at a high level” which meant that the reviewer’s “girlfriend’s Trance music collection could be heard for the neighbours to get annoyed at”. Coupled with that, Arutha added “this laptop makes worrying about hard disc space non existent”, whilst suggesting “the screen is a rather nice affair, with it being not too small or not too large”.

Of course, it can’t all be to one’s taste – “The mouse pad is a different story, which I didn’t like at all”, but overall – a very positive review indeed! Read it all here.
